Wendy Day, Church of the Nativity, will be knitting a collection of thirteen bears plus one smaller bear that will be sent to our contact at Fort Hood to be auctioned off in early March. The purpose of the auction is to raise funds to complete a memorial in memory of the thirteen people killed which included an unborn child, hence the one smaller bear.

We also hope to discover a way to provide these little bears to others, having discussed providing them to police, who would then distribute them to small children in trauma situations. Another need is at Dover Air Force base, where the small bears are handed out to the children of our slain soldiers.

Our next meeting is Apr. 13 at the Church of the Nativity, Newport.

Our Diocesan Sacred Stitches group has sharing as its main goal. Sacred Stitches invites you to meet people from different churches in our very large Diocese several times a year at different locations where we share our ideas and have a time of fellowship. 
 
Each host church provides beverages and some snacks, while attendees bring a bag lunch, their ideas and knitting.
 
Recently, we have started a yarn exchange.  You can bring along any yarn that you might want to give away and take home some new-to-you yarn. 
 
Pocket Prayer Shawls is an ongoing project of Sacred Stitches.
 
What's a "Pocket" prayer shawl? "Pocket" prayer shawls can be carried in pockets or used in situations where a large shawl is not appropriate or allowed, such as intensive care units or by our troops in combat. It's easy to make one from leftover bits of yarn. Essentially, they are "Prayers you can hold onto". Prayer Cloths can be knitted, crocheted, loomed, or sewn. Patterns are included below.

use garter stitch (knit every row) 
or I cast on 15 stitches and do Knit 1, Purl
1 across each row, being sure that the following rows are OPPOSITE stitches (knit the purls, purl the knits) They lie flat and keep their shape very well.

together repeat from * until last stitch, knit 1
row 2 Purl
row 3 knit 1 *purl 3 together, (knit 1, purl1, knit 1) into next stitch - repeat
from * to last stitch, knit 1
repeat these four rows 15 times for a total of 60 rows
bind off

 

Simple Garter Stitch Prayer Cloth

Cast on 36 stitches
knit every row for 60 rows

Easy Knitted Prayer Cloth

size:12” x 12”
Use a needle sized 7 - 9. 
Any worsted weight yarn
Cast on 4 sts,
Row 1 k 1st row. 
Row 2 k2 inc in next st, k1. 
Row 3 k2,inc in next st, k to end of row. 
Repeat the k2, inc in next st, k to end of row until you have 12” along the side on the needle. 
Next row k1, k2Tog, k to end of row.
Do this row until 5 stitches are left. 
Then, k2, k2Tog, k1. 
Bind off the 4 sts.
